THE HAIRY GIRAFFE… IN FRENCH POLYNESIA
We spent five weeks in French Polynesia, one of which was in the Tuamotu archipelago.
Here, we present our detailed itinerary for this week. On the agenda: Tikehau and Rangiroa, two groups of atolls. Unlike the Society Islands or the Marquesas, the Tuamotu archipelago mainly comprises groups of atolls. Forget about volcanic islands with rugged landscapes. The highest point in Tikehau is 10 meters above sea level…
If you’re seeking a Robinson Crusoe-like experience and want to spend your time on the beach or in the water (snorkeling and diving), the Tuamotu Islands are the ideal place. However, those who enjoy hiking and viewpoints might find it a bit dull…

One-Week Itinerary in the Tuamotu Islands
Day 1: Flight from Bora Bora. We flew over Rangiroa before landing in Tikehau. Our accommodation is right on the beach. In Tikehau, the Heiva festival is still in full swing: we spent the evening enjoying the celebration, with singing contests and coconut cracking competitions.
Day 2: An expedition day ahead. We crossed Tikehau’s lagoon, which spans about thirty kilometers: if you’re prone to seasickness, it’s better to come prepared… We swam with manta rays before spending part of the day on a gorgeous motu.
After a stop at Bird Island, we returned to the main atoll of Tikehau and admired a stunning sunset.
Day 3: Tuamotu activities are largely focused on the sea since there aren’t proper islands (see our article on the differences between the French Polynesian archipelagos). After a day on the lagoon side, we spent a day at the beach on the reef side. The landscapes are quite distinct: constant sounds of crashing waves and much rockier terrain.
Day 4: It’s time to relax and make the most of it: rest, beach time, and kayaking.
Day 5: After a very short flight, we arrived at Rangiroa.
Day 6: Rangiroa is renowned for its diving spots. For us, it was more of a necessary stop due to Air Tahiti’s flight routes. But not diving doesn’t mean staying at the hotel all day: the snorkeling spots are stunning.
And in the evening, we enjoyed the spectacle provided by dolphins at the Avatoru Pass.
Day 7: We leave the Tuamotu, heading to Papeete. There’s no direct connection between the Tuamotu and the Marquesas Islands. After a few days on almost deserted motus, Papeete seems like an enormous city to us!
